There are 10 naturally occurring hormones in the body that control our metabolism. But the most influential are insulin, cortisol and thyroxine plus oestrogen.
As women enter menopause their oestrogen levels usually start to change. Oestrogen has many roles, but one of them is to help control other hormones and keep them in balance.
When oestrogen levels start to change, so too does the balance of some of the other main hormones that control how fat is stored in the body.
Changing oestrogen levels is one of the key reasons some women start going up a dress size despite eating and exercising the same as they always have.
Insulin is the hormone that controls what the body does with the blood sugar from what is eaten (i.e. the metabolism).
If we liken the body’s fat stores to a warehouse, insulin is the truck that takes fat there. High blood sugar levels means more trucks taking more fat to the body’s fat stores.
Balancing out insulin levels is critical to loose and maintain a healthy body weight.
Cortisol is a stress-response hormone. The body produces it when it’s stressed. It’s one of the ‘fight or flight’ hormones.
Stress includes pain, poor sleep, excessive effort and anxiety. These all cause more cortisol to be released.
Excessive cortisol wreaks havoc in the body. It can force the body to put weight on, especially around the middle.
Cortisol must be controlled and balanced to achieve a healthy weight.
This is the main hormone produced by the thyroid. One of thyroxine’s roles is to regulate metabolism. If thyroxine levels are lower than normal, it may affect healthy weight levels.
If hormones are out of whack, it may result in weight gain and greater difficulty losing weight.
A key to maintaining a healthy weight may be to get these fat-controlling hormones back into balance.
We use a specific diet to help balance your fat-controlling hormones and acupuncture in support to manage pain and stress.
